18세기 조선의 두 천재 화가, 김홍도와 신윤복의 삶과 예술을 그린 드라마. 신윤복은 어릴 적부터 그림에 천부적인 재능을 보였다. 그의 아버지이자 도화서 원로 화가인 신한평은 가문의 명예를 위해 윤복을 남자로 키우고, 마침내 도화서의 화원으로 들여보낸다. 윤복은 왕의 신임을 받는 당대 최고의 화가 김홍도를 스승으로 모시고, 두 사람은 임금의 명에 따라 다양한 그림을 그린다. 홍도는 윤복의 재능을 알아보고 그의 천재성을 질투하고, 윤복은 자신에게 유달리 엄격한 홍도에게 지기 싫어서 자신의 실력을 더 갈고닦는다.
Based on a novel with the same title, Painter of the Wind illustrates the lives of two geniuses in the 18th century Joseon, the painters Kim Hong-do and Shin Yoon-bok. Since Yoon-bok revealed her gift at painting since childhood, her father raised her as a boy and made him a painter at the Academy of Painting. She becomes a mentee of Kim Hong-do, the painting genius and the King's trusted royal painter. The two end up competing, drawing various works under the King's order. Hong-do gets jealous of Yoon-bok's immense talent, while Yoon-bok tries her best to beat Hong-do, who is especially strict on her.
