서영은 매번 전교 1등을 놓치지 않을 만큼 똑똑하고 야무진 소녀이지만, 가난에 시달리면서 어머니를 고생시키는 아버지를 원망해 왔다. 결국 어머니가 병으로 쓰러져 세상을 떠났지만 아버지는 도박에 빠져서 뒤늦게 연락이 닿았다. 결국 서영은 학교를 자퇴하고 남동생 상우를 뒷바라지하고, 뒤늦게 대학에 진학했다. 여전히 형편은 어려워서 학교를 다니며 돈을 벌어야 했던 서영에게 고액 과외 일이 들어오고, 결국 성재의 입주 과외 선생이 된다. 그곳에서 만난 성재의 큰형 우재에게 특별한 감정을 \b느끼게 되고, 자존심 강하고 고집이 센 서영은 쉽게 되돌릴 수 없는 선택을 한다.
