1,500년 전 신라의 수도 서라벌을 누비던 화랑들의 열정, 사랑, 성장을 그린 청춘 드라마. 신라 시대, 권력을 장악한 왕비 지소는 왕권 강화를 위해 서라벌의 미남 청년들을 모아 '화랑'을 창설한다. 수많은 귀족 가문의 청년들 이 모여서 함께 교육받고 수련하는데, 그 가운데에 신분이 불분명한 두 청년이 주목받는다. 한 사람은 오랜 친구의 신분을 빌어 화랑이 되었고, 다른 이는 진짜 이름 대신 '지뒤'라는 별명으로 불린다. 두 청년은 서로를 위해 목숨도 내놓을 만큼 가장 친한 친구이면서, 동시에 한 여자의 마음을 놓고 경쟁하는 라이벌이다.
With a cast of talented stars and newcomers, including Park Seo Jun and V of BTS, this historical K-Drama follows the lives of the Hwarang, a group of elite warriors in the Silla dynasty who are trained to protect their King and their country. But everyone in the Hwarang is not who they seem; some of there for vengeance, some are there to hide from their enemies, and some are there to claim the throne.
